What You'll Need During Your Hospital Stay

Suggested Items

  • Personal items, including robe, slippers, and toiletries. Electric shavers, toothbrushes, and hairdryers are allowed in areas other than Intensive Care.

  • Recommendation:  Purchase an inexpensive pair of slippers and discard them prior to returning home to prevent unnecessary transmission of germs.

  • A list of medications you are taking.

  • Cash to pay for newspapers, gift shop articles, and other items (recommend no more than $40).

  • Credit card number and expiration date, please do not bring the credit card itself.

  • Telephone credit card number for long distance calls.

  • A few blank checks to pay for massage therapy and beauty services.

  • Your insurance identification cards:

    • If you have Medicare, bring your identification card.

    • If you have group health insurance, bring your identification card plus any special forms or pre-authorization.

    • If you have Medi-Cal, bring your current month’s card and proof of eligibility (POE) label.

    • If you are married, bring information about your spouse’s insurance coverage.  Many people are covered by their spouse’s insurance as well as their own.  In order to obtain the full insurance benefits for which you are eligible, we need this information to bill a secondary insurance carrier.

    • Bring your outpatient prescription insurance coverage information.

If you have questions about your insurance coverage, call a financial representative in Patient Financial Services at (650) 498-7200.
